This trip was particularly special for our family because it marked the first time my mother-in-law, Paula, visited Italy—the country of her heritage. A Perfect Stay at Diacceroni Agriturismo
Our accommodations were the perfect central location for experiencing all Tuscany has to offer. Diacceroni Agriturismo, a charming retreat in the heart of Tuscany, provided an authentic experience that allowed us to truly immerse ourselves in the region’s culture and lifestyle. Its central location made it an ideal base for exploring Tuscany’s most iconic destinations, while its serene surroundings offered a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of sightseeing.
One of the standout features of Diacceroni was its stunning saltwater pool, which quickly became a favorite spot for our family. While it was late in the season (October), we enjoyed unwinding by the pool, soaking in the views of the rolling hills and vineyards that stretched as far as the eye could see. It was the perfect way to relax and recharge.
The fresh pasta-making course hosted onsite was another highlight for all of us. Our teens loved rolling out dough and crafting their own pasta shapes, while my mother-in-law shared stories from her childhood, recalling visits to her grandparents’ home where she enjoyed authentic homemade Italian staples. The best part of the class was sitting down together to enjoy the delicious results.
Staying at an agriturismo was a cool experience, as you could enjoy the homegrown products. Diacceroni produces its own olive oil, wine, pasta, and fresh vegetables, and their chefs feature these homegrown products in delicious onsite meals. The welcome party and pizza party were equally memorable, giving us the chance to relax, savor local flavors, and connect with other travelers.
Siena: A City of History and Hidden Gems
Siena is a city that invites exploration, with its winding streets, stunning architecture, and rich history. You’ll tackle hills and uneven surfaces, but the effort rewards you with unforgettable experiences. One of the highlights of our visit was the Hunt for the 10 Treasures of Siena. This tour was perfect for our family, keeping our kids engaged while leading us to the city’s key highlights. We learned about the sites, discovered hidden gems, and left with a unique souvenir that captured the essence of our time in Siena.
Another memorable experience was the Tuscan Classic Tasting. As a wine enthusiast (but not a connoisseur), I loved learning about the region’s renowned wines. While our kids were far too young to sample the wines, they still found the experience fun, as the hosts were welcoming and accommodating to children. While we could have spent more time in Siena, we felt we had a fulfilling experience exploring the city’s cultural treasures.
Pisa: The Iconic Leaning Tower
No trip to Tuscany is complete without visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the bell tower of the Pisa Cathedral. We opted for the complete ticket PLUS tower, which allowed us to explore the cathedral and climb the tower. To ensure a smooth experience, we recommend purchasing tickets online in advance, as the tower has timed entry and tickets often sell out during peak season.
While the Leaning Tower is a must-see, we found Pisa to be quite touristy. Outside of enjoying a delicious lunch and marveling at the tower, we didn’t feel compelled to explore much else. However, the experience of climbing the tower and taking in the breathtaking views was unforgettable. It was a cool experience, but the true joy was watching my kids “hold up” the tower—a must-capture memory!
San Gimignano: A Taste of Tuscany
San Gimignano, with its medieval charm and stunning views, was a favorite for our family. People famously call it the “Town of Fine Towers” because its medieval skyline showcases 14 well-preserved tower houses that once symbolized the wealth and power of noble families. Prior to heading into the town, we visited Tenuta Torciana for a wine tasting and light lunch. This experience was incredibly kid-friendly, with our children enjoying their drinks in wine glasses and even learning how to swirl wine like pros.
Upon arriving in San Gimignano for the afternoon, we explored the streets and indulged in the world-famous gelato at Gelateria Dondoli. The flavors were absolutely divine and a hit with the whole family, making it a truly memorable treat. After wandering the streets, souvenir shopping, and capturing photos at Piazza della Cisterna, we rounded out our day at Vernaccia di San Gimignano for an easy wine tasting experience.
