London is Perfect for First-Time European Family Travel

When planning your family’s first European adventure, choosing the right destination can make all the difference. London, with its rich history, iconic landmarks, and family-friendly atmosphere, is the perfect place to start. From its proximity to other European cities, to its English-speaking culture, London offers an enriching experience for families. Here’s why London should be at the top of your list, along with highlights to help you make the most of your visit.

Why London is Perfect for First-Time Family Travelers

Convenient Flight Distance: London is one of the most accessible European cities for travelers from the U.S. Many of our cities have direct flights to iconic London Heathrow. The relatively short flight time from the Midwest or East Coast makes it a manageable journey for families.

English as the National Language: One of the biggest advantages of visiting London is the lack of a language barrier. Navigating the city, ordering meals, and exploring attractions is effortless, allowing families to focus on enjoying their trip without the added stress of translation challenges.

Gateway to Europe: London’s location makes it an ideal starting point for a multi-city European adventure. With high-speed train connections, you can easily pair your London trip with other iconic destinations:

  • Paris: Hop on the Eurostar and arrive in the City of Light in just over two hours. Explore the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and charming neighborhoods like Montmartre.
  • Amsterdam: Travel to the Netherlands via Eurostar in about four hours. Enjoy the city’s picturesque canals, world-class museums, and vibrant culture.
  • Edinburgh: Take a scenic journey north via UK rail carriers to Scotland’s capital. Here you can experience Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and the city’s deep literary history (perfect for Harry Potter lovers!).
  • Bath: This historic city is perfect for a day trip to see Roman baths, Georgian architecture, and charming streets.
  • Bristol: A day trip to England’s west coast offers a vibrant mix of adventure. Exploring colorful street art, rich maritime history, and creative culture is all a short train ride away.

How Long Should You Stay?

To truly experience the best of London, we recommend spending at least 4-5 full days in the city. This allows enough time to explore its most famous landmarks, enjoy its vibrant culture, and even indulge in some tailored experiences like afternoon tea. Thoughtful planning is key to making the most of your time and creating a memorable journey for the whole family.

London is Perfect for First-Time European Family Travel

London is brimming with family-friendly attractions that will captivate teens and tweens while offering enriching experiences for the whole family. Here are some must-visit sites:

Greater London:

  • Tower of London: Step back in time at this historic fortress, home to the Crown Jewels and centuries of royal history. Kids will love the tales of kings, queens, and even the infamous ravens. A highlight for our children, the expert storytelling of the Yeoman Warders had them eager to learn and hear more.
  • Tower Bridge: Marvel at this iconic symbol of London. Enjoy breathtaking views of the River Thames from the glass-floored walkway above the roadway. We enjoyed fun photo ops both outside this iconic bridge and over the walkway.
  • Borough Market: A foodie’s paradise, this bustling market offers a variety of cuisines and a chance to sample local flavors. Be sure to come with an appetite and enjoy sampling a variety of eats and sweets from different vendors, including other cultures.
  • Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Station: A must-visit for Harry Potter fans. This magical photo spot lets you imagine yourself heading off to Hogwarts. Our kids loved posing with the trolley disappearing into the wall. The nearby Harry Potter shop is perfect for picking up themed souvenirs.
Changing of the Guard

Westminster:

  • Buckingham Palace: Witness the Changing of the Guard and learn about the British monarchy at this world-famous royal residence. This unique experience is a must, but be sure to check times and dates, as this does not happen every day.
  • London Eye & Big Ben: Take in stunning views of the city from the London Eye and snap photos of the iconic Big Ben and Houses of Parliament. Even though Big Ben was under construction during our visit, we enjoyed seeing it and the River Thames from atop the London Eye.
  • Westminster Abbey: Discover the history and grandeur of this architectural masterpiece, a must-see for families who love history and culture. We were surprised at how much our tween children enjoyed our tour of Westminster, and while they did not know all the famous dignitaries buried there, they appreciated learning while also taking in the grand architecture of the exterior and interior. If this is on your bucket list, be sure to book tickets in advance.
  • Afternoon Tea at St. Ermin’s: Treat your family to a quintessentially British experience with a delightful afternoon tea in a luxurious setting. Our daughters loved getting dressed up for this unique experience inside the beautiful St. Ermin’s hotel. They were delighted to learn that afternoon tea is much more filling than just tea, as they enjoyed finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, and pastries, all of which were delicious!

Soho:

  • Piccadilly Circus & Trafalgar Square: These vibrant hubs are perfect for soaking in the energy of the city, with street performers, shops, and plenty of photo opportunities. Having been to NYC, we were excited to see how this stacked up to Times Square…thankfully, it was much cleaner.
  • Harrods & Hamleys: Indulge in premium shopping at Harrods and let the kids explore the world’s oldest toy store, Hamleys, for a magical experience.

  • Tailored Itineraries: Every family is unique, and your trip should reflect your interests and travel style. A personalized itinerary ensures that everyone in the family has an enriching and enjoyable experience.
  • Premium Accommodations: Stay in centrally located hotels to maximize convenience and comfort. This allows you to spend less time commuting and more time exploring. We stayed in the Kensington area for its central location, and Westminster is another great spot for first-time family visitors.
  • Effortless Exploration: London’s efficient public transport system, including the Tube and iconic double-decker buses, makes getting around the city a breeze. For a more personalized experience, consider private tours.
  • Pairing London with Other Cities: Extend your adventure by adding a visit to Paris or Amsterdam via the Eurostar train or consider a trip to Edinburgh via the London North Eastern Railway.
